Here’s the situation:
2 weeks ago she got tonsillitis (yeah an 11 month old!) and developed a double ear infection as a result (she is super prone to resistant ear infections– we go to the ENT in a few weeks.) She was put on Augmentin– which is very strong and upsets her stomach sometimes. We give her Florastor at 2 feedings a day when she has an antibiotic to try and keep her little digestive system healthy. 4 days into the antibiotic, she caught her brother’s stomach virus. Last Wednesday she had diarrhea 16 times and no wet diapers. She also developed a yeast infection in her diaper area very rapidly (not shocking considering.) Her doctor gave us Nystatin to apply 4 times a day for a week. The diarrhea is just subsiding now and she had her last antibiotic dose this morning. The yeast (which was just red and irritated and PAINFUL) was looking better yesterday, now looks less widespread, but seems to have moved from the front of her pubic area to her leg creases and labia. It has also gotten little white pimples or blisters. Obviously I’ll call her doctor in the morning and back we’ll go, but are there any words of wisdom from someone who’s been there?

We are keeping her diaper area very clean, bathing her in colloidal oatmeal for the irritation and using a zinc-based cream when not applying the Nystatin. Oh– she’s teething too. POOR THING!

I LOVE YOU BOTH!!! I am going to work with both excellent suggestions– the Domeboro sounds like what we should do first– do you get yours from a specialty-type pharmacy or could i do Target?
The yogurt is helpful too and I looked up pau d’arco and it gave me a great idea. We live in Austin and the seasonal mold is horrible at times here. The mold allergies make us so miserable. We will try the tea for that. I may also try it on baby’s diaper area tomorrow.

Only problem now– picking a "best answer" tomorrow!

Yeast Infection in Babies – The Remedy for Baby Yeast Infection that Keeps It Away

Baby Yeast Infection (baby thrush) is normally without danger, although its symptoms may be very distressful for the baby affected. It is a kind of Candida infection occurring mainly in babies two months old or less. Nevertheless, older children may be impacted as well.

Additional common triggers of baby yeast infection are:

1. Antibiotics treatment. Antibiotics inhibit the correct functioning of the immune system, favoring candida growth excessively.

2. The use of dirty pacifiers or bottles.

3. Breastfeeding with a yeast-infected mother.

4. Conditions of warmness or humidity.

First of all, there are typically no veritable consequences in the Candida infection of a baby. However, secondary effects of dehydration and poor feeding can be reasons for concern. In the first phase of infection, obvious secondary effects are often distress and problems that the baby has in sucking or swallowing. In advanced stages, yeast infection for babies can move through the intestines to cause diaper rash. Additionally, complications linked to Candida infection may lead to high fever requiring immediate medical attention.

The mutual infection caused by breastfeeding of mother and child is yet another problem related to baby thrush. This can be very painful for the mother and moving the baby to alternate or artificial sources of milk may happen to soon.

Baby yeast infection will often go away by itself without the need for further medical intervention. Nonetheless, if pain and poor feeding are brought on by a baby’s yeast infection, the advice to parents is to consult a pediatrician for the right solution.

In general and for a recurring infection, a holistic / alternative treatment is strongly indicated. Overall, for baby thrush, prevention is better than cure. Some lactation consultants suggest keeping nipples rinsed and dry all the time as yeast likes moisture, and specifically, rinsing the nipples before feeding. Many physicians and paraprofessionals give recommendations that both the pacifier and the bottle nipple undergo sterilization before use.

For baby nutrition, small amounts of non-gluten grains such as amaranth and quinoa can be given. Apart from that, I recommend eliminating candida-provoking foods from your baby’s food program (remove all refined carbohydrates and gluten grains, for instance).

Reduction or elimination of red meat, food which is preserved and canned, fruit (other than lemons, limes and cranberries), mold-favoring foodstuffs such as corn, foods rich in yeast like mushrooms and vinegar (but not Apple Cider Vinegar), dairy produce (above all from cow’s milk; goat’s milk and sheep’s milk produce can be taken in moderation), caffeine and egg whites.

Give your children anti-Candida and cleansing foods, and at the same time supplement their intake with vitamins and minerals to boost their immune system, including a daily dose of probiotics, to follow my second recommendation.

A significant positive change in the condition of your baby’s yeast infection can be accomplished simply by following these few actions.

You may not know it but there is an infant yeast infection. Any baby can get an infant yeast infection which commonly occurs in the moist diaper area. Infant yeast infection is possible because the infection can be transmitted through child birth if the mother is infected with yeast. Infant yeast infections can also be caused by the mother failing to keep female infants clean in the vaginal area. Infant yeast infections also can be caused by inappropriate bathing of the child. An infant yeast infection will typically start out like a diaper rash, but it won’t go away and it won’t heal like a diaper rash.

It can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between infant yeast infection or diaper rash. That does not eliminate infant yeast infection as the diaper area is often affected. The second most common form of infant yeast infection is oral thrush in the infant’s mouth. However, if an infant yeast infection does ensue no matter how careful the caregivers are, there are several ways in which the pediatrician will treat the infection. In the case of infant yeast infection in the diaper area, a special topical ointment will be prescribed, along with directions to keep the diaper off the baby as much as possible to increase the passage of air and allow the infant yeast infection to dry up on its own.

The plastic covers that some babies wear over their reusable diapers are a really bad idea for an infant yeast infection, because the plastic is a moisture barrier, and that is precisely the opposite of how to treat an infant yeast infection. Generally, though, yeast infections, particularly infant yeast infections, are most likely in those who have a weak immune system to begin with. In other words, an infant yeast infection is most likely to develop in the sickly child. Also a baby on antibiotics is more susceptible since the medication will kill the healthy bacteria that help to keep down an infant yeast infection. You should take a baby to the doctor to have an infection properly diagnosed especially if you haven’t dealt with an infection of this kind before. If the same child has a recurrent problem of yeast infections then perhaps your doctor can help with some suggestions on how you canprevent an infant yeast infection.
